Excavation FAQ

What is excavation, and why is it important?
Excavation involves earth removal. Or earth moving, a.k.a. moving the earth from one spot to fill another for grading purposes,, or removal of soil, rocks, etc.,from a spot to set a foundation for buildings, roads, or utilities. It’s key for making there’s a solid base & good drainage.

What types of projects require excavation?
Lots of projects require excavation: home foundations, swimming pools, septic systems, roadwork, and installation of water, sewer, and electrical lines.

How long does the excavation process take?
How long it takes depends on the project’s size and how complex it is. Also, soil composition – light sandy soil, dense soil, rocky substrata – matters. A small house project might take days; big commercial sites could take weeks.

What equipment is used for excavation?
You’ll see backhoes, bulldozers, excavators, trenchers, and skid-steer loaders on these jobs. Often, our gear depends on the job’s size & what you’re digging up.

How do I prepare my property for excavation?
Before starting, we get rid of trees, rocks & any other items in the way. We also mark utility lines so nothing gets damaged or disrupted.

What permits are needed for excavation?
We often need permits for digging, especially in cities or when public areas are affected.

How do I choose a reliable excavation contractor?
Check their experience & references. Read reviews & make sure they have a license and insurance. Get several quotes & ask about their safety record as well.

Can excavation damage nearby structures or landscapes?
Yes, if not done carefully, digging can affect nearby buildings or landscapes—or damage & disrupt underground utilities. Skilled workers will take steps to avoid these situations.

What is the cost of excavation?
Costs change based on project size, soil condition & needed equipment.  Other factors, such as how easy the site is to access, preexisting obstructions, and underground utilities also can affect the cost.

What are the risks associated with excavation?
Digging risks include soil collapsing, hitting underground utilities, flooding & erosion. Good planning and safe operations at M & M help reduce these risks.

How does weather affect excavation?
Weather can have a significantly negative affect on excavation—rain, snow & freezing temperatures can delay work. Wet soil becomes unstable; frozen ground is tougher to dig.

What is site grading, and why is it important?
Site grading means leveling land after digging to make sure water drains correctly and that there’s a stable base for building. It helps keep water from pooling and makes sure the completed project will stand the test of time.

How are excavation sites kept safe?
Safety comes from good planning, protective gear and years of experience. At M & M, our safety record is flawless and we continue to be very vigilant.

What happens to the excavated material?
The dug-up soil and materials can be reused onsite for backfilling or taken away for disposal—it depends on what its composition and what the project requires.

How do I know if there are underground utilities on my property?
Before we dig, if there is even the slightest doubt about what lies beneath the surface, we will use a utility locator service to mark gas lines, water pipes & electrical lines  underground—avoiding damage during digging is essential.

Concrete Removal FAQ

What is concrete removal & why do I need it?
Concrete removal is the process of breaking up & removal of old, damaged, or unwanted concrete, such as an old patio slab. You might need removal oif the existing concrete is cracked due to earthquakes, settling, uneven grading, or if you are planning to replace it with something completely new.

How long does it take to remove concrete?
The time needed for concrete removal depends upon many variables such as the size, thickness, and weight of the old slab, along with the equipment we will need to complete the job.  Access to the slab is also a factor; a tennis court located at the far edge fo your property, far from any access paths or roads will require more time. Smaller jobs can require only a few hours. Larger, more complex jobs may take a day or more.

Methods for concrete removal?
We use many different methods including jackhammers, hydraulic splitters, heavy machinery like excavators with breakers. It ultimately depends on the scope of the project.

Is concrete removal noisy?
Yes, it’s noisy, especially with jackhammers. We do our best to lessen the noise around but can’t make it silent.

DIY concrete removal or hire pros?
You can do it yourself but it’s hard work and needs special tools. It’s better to get knowledgeable professionals to do it quickly and more importantly, safely.

What happens to the concrete after it’s removed?
Once removed, we usually recycle it. The concrete is crushed and reused as aggregate for new projects. This cuts waste and helps the environment.

Does concrete removal require a permit?
In some municipalities, yes, especially if it’s part of a large renovation or demolition. We can check if you need a permit and help you obtain it.

How much does concrete removal cost?
Cost varies on size, thickness & location of concrete. We’ll give a detailed estimate covering labor, equipment & disposal fees.

Can we do this in cold weather?
Yes but it might take longer because frozen concrete is tougher to break up. We take extra steps to keep things safe & efficient in cold.

Will nearby structures/landscaping get damaged?
We’re careful to avoid any damage during removal. We’ll check the area first & use precise methods to protect your property.

Can we remove reinforced concrete with rebar?
Yes, we can handle reinforced concrete with rebar using special tools & techniques to cut through the steel reinforcements effectively.

What site prep is required for removal?
Before starting, we clear obstacles, mark boundaries & identify/protect underground utilities. Preparation is key for success.

What about removal from confined/hard-to-reach spots?|
Yes, we can remove concrete from even the tightest spots. With smaller gear and hand tools, we safely tackle those tricky areas.

Safety precautions during removal?
Safety is always a top priority. We gear up properly, secure work & follow industry standards ensuring that everyone and everything is safe.

What to do post-removal?
After removing concrete? We prep the site for its next use whether laying new concrete, landscaping or starting new projects. We can further help by recommending what steps should be taken next based on your plans.
